Power vs Authority

"Power" is the ability to control. "Authority" is the legal/given right to implement power. "Power" without authority is "illegitimate power". "Authority" without "power" is "undermined authority".

The current scenario is someone with "illegitimate power" trampling over an incumbent who has the authority to power.

"Power" in a democracy must come with legitimate authority. Power without legitimate authority is not democracy. History has proven that those weilding power without legitimate authority will eventually end up in dire straits.
